Everyone knows the famous phrase from the American Revolution: “No taxation without representation.” We are taught that the colonists were furious about the British government imposing new taxes, leading to acts of rebellion like the Boston Tea Party.

But if you look at the actual numbers, there is a striking detail. The effective tax burden on the colonists at the time is often estimated at only around 1%, a tiny fraction compared to today’s top US federal income tax bracket of 37%.

To the colonists, 1% felt like tyranny. To us, it sounds almost trivial.

The lesson: perspective is everything.

Why a single stop-loss feels like the end of the world

Trading works the same way. Most new traders get completely swallowed up by short-term noise.

  • That single losing trade? It feels like a catastrophic failure.
  • A small drawdown in your account? It feels like your entire trading career is over.

But in the grand scheme of a full trading history, that one stop-loss is as insignificant as a 1% tax burden felt to the wider economy. Reacting as though a single loss is a crisis usually means you have no long-term perspective yet.

Forget 10 trades. Judge your system over 100.

Professional traders don’t waste time judging their performance based on one day or one week. They don’t even care much about a sequence of ten trades. That’s too small a sample size, it’s just noise.

They evaluate their system over hundreds, or even thousands, of trades. Data is what removes the illusion of luck. Without it, every trade is emotional, random, and stressful. With data, trading becomes a calm, long-term statistical process. It’s not a gamble, it’s a probability game.

The true edge is time and data

History shows that economic systems, tax structures, and financial markets all evolve slowly over long periods.

Successful traders work the same way. They stop reacting emotionally to every individual outcome and instead focus on making consistent, high-probability decisions.

In the long run, discipline is the real edge that compounds. That’s where the real results are hidden. The boring, repetitive work is what makes the most money. Forget the drama of your last loss. Focus on your 1,000th trade.
